Help us locate and place Starfish

Do you know of a talented student in Kenya unable to finance their secondary school education? Are you an elite secondary school hoping to place talented, fully-sponsored Starfish in your school system? Contact us to learn more.

How do we plan to use your future donations?

We are fully committed to being good stewards of your generous donations. To reinforce this emphasis, Board Directors are required to give a fixed percentage of their income to Starfish Africa. Board Directors' contributions comprise more than one-third of overall revenues, and so we allocate your money the same way we allocate our own -- with an eye on efficiency and maximum effectiveness. We have several controls in place to ensure money is spent as planned, and we very actively oversee our financial reporting to confirm that every expense meshes with our mission statement.

Sponsoring a Starfish student costs roughly $1,000 to $1,200 USD per year, a number that includes both tuition at an elite school and Starfish Africa holiday recess activities. Our only other major outlay each year is for our Field Officer's salary and operating expenses.

Most international NGOs view spending anything above 75 percent of an annual budget on program expenses as 'good'. In 2008, Starfish Africa was able to send more than 97 percent of our budget to Kenya to cover on-the-ground program costs. Roughly halfway through 2009, we are set to improve on that number; we seek to send more than 98 percent of our 2009 budget to directly meet our program needs.
